PVC Plastic Toys – Finnish Consumer Agency Tests For Safety
The Finnish Consumer Agency tested some PVC plastic toys for under 3 year-olds intended for putting in the mouth and some child care requisites. The products were tested for the possible presence of phthalate used for softening PVC plastic and for the release of this substance into solution.
Of the 21 toys tested most were teething toys, but a few also constituted bathroom books and squeaking/crying toys. Phthalates were found in five toys. These toys are being voluntarily withdrawn from the market.
Phthalates are used in plastics manufacturing to soften these. In small amounts phthalate is not known to be harmful, but from the health perspective and to minimise accumulation over the human life span it is best for people to avoid ingesting them.
Consequently, an effort is being made through the legislation to prevent the use of phthalates and especially their dissolution from e.g. consumer goods. Saliva may cause phthalates to dissolve out of plastic, for which reason toys made for putting in the mouths of small children constitute risk products.
