How to choose a baby crib mattress and crib safety tips
There are as many shapes and sizes of baby crib mattress as there are different cribs for them to go in. It is of paramount importance for the safety of your child that the baby crib mattress fits perfectly in the crib.
Baby Crib Mattress Safety Tips:
Here are a few tips that you should observe when shopping for a baby crib mattress:
Ensure that the outside dimensions of the mattress and the inside dimensions of the crib are almost exactly the same. If there is a gap between the edge of the baby crib mattress and the sidebars, headboard or footboard of the crib the child could become wedged in the gap and suffocate.
There are two types of baby crib mattress, quilted with coil springs and foam. Generally speaking, foam is lighter making changing the crib bedding easier and coil lasts longer, although foam should easily last the time period required by one child.
It is most important that it be firm.
Investigators have suggested that a too soft baby crib mattress may have been a contributing factor to some child suffocations and incidents of SIDS.
A newborn baby spends about three-quarter of his or her few months of life in its crib, reducing to about half until it is old enough to move to a bed. During this time the child will more than double in height and weight. Give your infant the comfort and safety he or she deserves when you purchase a baby crib mattress.
