Graco – Right from the Beginning®

Graco’s slogan, “Right for the Beginning”, is definitely a reflection of their accomplishments. They were the first to create the extremely popular Swyngomatic®, the wind-up baby swing that sold millions, and they’ve been first in baby and infant products ever since. Let’s find out where they started this climb to the top.

Graco history

Graco was originally started in Philadelphia in 1942 as Graco Metal Products, specializing in machine and car parts which they sold to local manufacturers. There were two partners, Russell Gray and Robert Cone. In 1953, Gray left the company to Cone, who wanted to create a unique line of products, but wasn’t sure what.

One of the Graco employees, David Saint, used to watch his wife on the swing in their backyard, rocking one of their nine children to sleep. Being a creative soul, David got to work and, building on the idea of his wife swinging their children to sleep, invented the Swyngomatic. Graco expected to sell about 10,000 of them, but ended up selling millions. Baby swings were a hit! And that was the first of a whole line of firsts for Graco.

In 1987, David Saint’s son, Nate, invented the Pack N’ Play® Portable Playard, and that had the same success as the Swyngomatic – indoor playards became a Godsend for busy parents. Then Graco introduced the Travel System, a car seat stroller combination that became a favorite for parents who didn’t want to wake their babies up when they transported them from home to car or vice versa.

Today Graco is known for a great line of aluminum-framed strollers called Quattro Tour™, as well as a full line of infant car seats, featuring the TurboBooster™ youth booster car seat. And with their history of firsts, there’s sure to be more to come in the future.

Graco finds a way

If there’s something that parents have indicated to be a need, then Graco baby products will find a way to fulfill that need. When parents asked for a way to swing their babies to sleep, Graco built on their original Swyngomatic baby swing and developed an advanced line of baby swings with variable speeds and adjustable reclining positions.
When parents asked for safer walkers, Graco designed their line of activity centers, with all kinds of things to keep their babies educated and entertained.

These few examples are only a spattering of all the wonderful Graco baby products. It’s no surprise that Graco has become a household name for busy parents.
